Resurgence Behavioral Health : Treating Sex Addiction
Sex addiction is a topic that needs great attention because to most people who are addicted to sex, they feel its normal and that they don’t need any help. The truth is sex addiction can be devastating to deal with because it affects every aspect of an individual’s life. The repercussions are so huge that it cannot be ignored. Instead of having healthy and normal sexual relationships, sex addicts use sexually related activities to satisfy their never ending sexual urges. They fantasize and get involved in sexually related activities until it becomes very detrimental to their livelihood. In most cases addicts may be having so much sex but not enjoying themselves. This is because victims use sex as release outlet for their addiction rather than having meaningful relationships with their partners.
Many treatments approach addiction to sex in the same manner as drug addiction. Remember an addiction is the body’s dependency on a chemical and teaching the body to stop craving for certain substances. Many people seeking help for this devastating sickness don’t know exactly where to get help or what to do. Moreover, the path to sane sexuality is still sometimes muddy and confusing.
1. 12 Step Programs. This is a treatment program designed for sex addicts to help them recover from their addiction. Mostly for sex addicts they are allowed to join the sex addict anonymous (SAA) 12 step program. Attending SAA meetings starts an addict on a new way to life. The SAA is a fellowship that supports recovery from sex addiction. Walking through the 12 step program leads to a great transformation that results in sustainable relief from the addiction.
2. Stay away from pornography. Pornography plays a major role in sex addiction. Pornography for many sex addicts combined with regular masturbation is the cornerstone for most sex addicts. Many sex addicts have great difficulty getting sober from this behavior. The truth is pornography with fantasy creates an unreal world that the addict visits throughout their adolescence and other developmental stages which creates an object relationship that conditions their emotional and sexual self to depend upon these objects and fantasies to meet their emotional and sexual needs hundreds of times before having sex with a real person.
3. Therapy and medications are sometimes used in the treatment of sex addictions. Oftentimes medications are useful for decreasing the sexual compulsions, sex drive or arousal of some sex offenders. This is important for sex addicts who seek celibacy to abstain from their sexual compulsions. In therapy you are allowed to air out your feelings and this is a major step in treating a sex addict.
Treatments include helping the sex addicts learn how to have healthy sexual relationships. In this part of treatment, the addict’s partner is also included in therapy for it to work. After recovery from treatments and therapy ex addicts can join many support groups to prevent relapses in their conditions.
